2006 Notable Children's Books in the English Language Arts

The Notable Children’s Books in the Language Arts Committee will introduce the 2006 Notable Books List. Following a slide presentation of each of the 30 books, participants will be invited to engage in roundtable conversations with committee members and Notable Books authors and illustrators.

Master Class in Teaching Children’s Literature

Keeping the Love of Literature Alive in This High-Stakes Testing Environment

Saturday, November 18, 5:45-7:00 PM

The 2006 Master Class will focus on how professors of children’s literature can help their students keep the love of literature and reading alive in their classrooms within the current era of testing and mandated curricula. The panel will feature children’s literature authors Candace Fleming and Jim Murphy, who will talk about the writing of fiction and nonfiction books within this environment. Professors Nancy Roser and Kathy Short will address issues of theory, policy, and curricula.

Workshop:

Let's Get Smart About Art: Developing Visual Literacy with Picture Books

Monday, November 20, 9:00-3:30 PM

The purpose of this workshop is to help teachers learn how to talk about and look carefully at picture book art. Workshop presenters will include award winning illustrators of children's literature (Margaret Chodos-Irvine, Elisa Kleven, Kadir Nelson and Leuyen Pham), art editors from publishing companies (Jeannette Lawson and Paula Wiseman) and scholars who specialize in picture book art (Barbara Kiefer and Kenneth and Sylvia Marantz).
