As editors of the Journal of Children’s Literature, a refereed journal of the Children’s Literature Assembly of the National Council of Teachers of English, we invite those interested in issues and topics related to children’s and young adult literature to submit ORIGINAL manuscripts for publication in future issues. We request articles that are grounded in current theory and research, features about authors and/or illustrators of children’s books, reviews of research, creative teaching strategies at all levels from elementary to college, criteria for evaluating literary works, and current issues relative to children’s literature. Submissions may be articles, reviews, interviews, letters, or essays. Sections of the journal include:
· Concepts and Themes. These refereed articles focus on trends, recent research, issues of critical theory, genre studies, and other concerns. Upcoming themes include:
Open Themed Issue (Spring 2011) Due: September 1, 2010 In this open themed issue, we invite researchers, teachers, and students to submit articles related to children’s literature. What should readers of The Journal of Children’s Literature be thinking about in regard to books intended for children and young adults? What trends do you see in the field of children’s literature? Can you provide insightful content analyses of recently published books related to topics (e.g., President Barack Obama, the dust bowl, etc.) deemed relevant and timely by the publishing industry? How is the field of children’s literature changing and how might its readers be affected? Join us in putting together a collection of articles that will provide those interested in children’s literature with much to contemplate.
Visual Storytelling (Fall 2011) Due: February 1, 2011 Visual storytelling is likely as old as mankind. In the world of children’s literature, this type of storytelling has occurred, in large part, through picturebooks. However, children’s literature is an ever-changing field, and changes in visual storytelling are easily uncovered when one examines picturebooks published in different decades including the present one. Changes are also evident in the emergence of hybrid texts such as The Invention of Hugo Cabret and in the proliferation of graphic novels. We invite authors to explore various types of visual storytelling in children’s literature and to do so from different perspectives: How do authors and illustrators tell stories through pictures and words? What is the nature of picturebooks? What is the nature of graphic novels and other formats in which pictures play an integral role? How do children engage with and respond to these formats? What is the role of the teacher in supporting and guiding children’s engagement with these texts?
Creative Process. We believe that the more we understand about the creative process, the deeper are our insights into literature. This, in turn, enables us to more effectively guide students’ explorations of literature. Toward this end, this section of the journal will contain interesting and lively refereed articles and interviews by and about children’s authors and illustrators and their work that will give us insight into the creative process. We encourage potential contributors to link their pieces to the theme of the issue.
