CLA EXPERT CLASS
Exploring Heart & Hope with Biographies
The 2024 CLA Expert Class celebrates the intersection of heart, hope, and humanity in biographies for young people. Along with members of The Biography Clearinghouse team, we’ll demonstrate the potential of biographies within English Language Arts and across the curriculum. Come join us as we investigate the craft of biography and create new texts together in this highly interactive roundtable format! Saturday, November 23 5:45 – 7:00 PM EST Room 102 A Chairs Mary Ann Cappiello & Sara Sterner Co-Chair: Kathy Short |
About the Session
In 2019, a group of literacy educators and children’s biographers Barb Rosenstock and Tonya Bolden developed the concept of The Biography Clearinghouse, a website that publishes interviews with authors and illustrators of picture book, middle grade, and young adult life stories, and a range of teaching ideas, all offered within a three-part framework of Investigate, Explore, and Create.
|
The“Investigate” stage focuses on the craft of biography and the processes authors and illustrators use when researching and creating their books. The “Explore” stage focuses on the ways in which biographies can be used to learn content, understand disciplinary practices, and foster socio-emotional learning. Finally, the “Create” stage invites young people to create new texts and artifacts in response to the biographies they read, taking up some of the research, writing, and illustrative practices modeled by the book creators whose work they have studied.
The Biography Clearinghouse has also created a database of picture book biographies on Library Thing. Participants will walk away with new ideas for using biographies across the curriculum PK-12, and new ways to support preservice and inservice teachers to deepen their understanding of the genre and the curricular possibilities it holds. Snacks will be shared along with door prizes and giveaways! |
