The Journal of Children’s Literature is a refereed journal devoted to teaching, research, and scholarship in the field of children’s literature. It is the publication of the Children’s Literature Assembly (CLA) of NCTE and is published twice annually.
We invite applicants to share their vision for the Journal of Children’s Literature that expands professional conversations and knowledge about children’s literature with a commitment to equity and diversity. We seek JCL editors who value new voices and perspectives in the children’s literature community and are willing to cultivate upcoming scholars. We welcome innovations and initiatives for extending our connection to the children’s literature community through digital modalities that leverage and expand our journal's character as an online publication. The position is for a three-year term (2026-2028). The current co-editors and the new editor(s) will work together during the production of the Spring 2025 (JCL 51.1) and Fall 2025 (JCL 51.2) issues as part of the editorship transition process.

Interested candidates may apply individually or as a team. Submit a letter of application which includes the following details:
  • plan for future directions of the Journal of Children’s Literature, including envisioned thematic threads, columns, and other components;
  • general qualifications in the field of children’s literature including but not limited to previous experiences writing, editing, reviewing, and/or publishing in the field;
  • prior experiences with the Children’s Literature Assembly and/or the National Council of Teachers of English; and
  • possible resources to support the editorship, including institutional support (e.g., graduate assistantship, course release).
Applicants must be members of the Children’s Literature Assembly and the National Council of Teachers of English.

If you are interested in applying, please email Wendy Stephens (CLA Vice President) at [email protected] for a more detailed information document about the JCL Editor(s)’ responsibilities.

Application Materials must be received by August 31, 2024

Electronic submission of application materials is required. Please send curriculum vitae for each individual if applying as a team. Send a letter of application and an abbreviated curriculum vitae highlighting relevant experience to:
